Only a handful of couples can boast both partners as celebrated artists, and among them are Saurganga Darshandhari and Prithvi Shrestha, currently active in Nepal. They’ve been steadfastly honing their unique styles over the years. Now, they’re showcasing their collective artistry at the MCube Gallery in Chakupat.

Speaking about the exhibition, Gallery Director Manish Lal Shrestha expresses, “We’ve been closely observing the artistic journey of these individuals for quite some time, eager to showcase their work. February, known as the month of love, presents the perfect opportunity for us to finally unveil their artwork, and we couldn’t be more delighted.”

Renowned in the art scene for her expertise in printmaking, Saurganga Darshandhari pursued her studies in this medium in Bangladesh and currently serves as an academy member at the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts. Through her art, she intricately captures narratives of human connection and resilience. The exhibition features two series of her work: “Maya” and “Returning Home.” In “Maya,” she delicately portrays the intimate dynamics of familial relationships, imbued with love and the weight of maternal responsibilities. Her artwork evokes a sense of tender affection and perseverance. The fluidity within her pieces allows viewers to traverse the complexities of life, where challenges and obstacles are inherent, yet essential for growth. Each artwork encapsulates the ebb and flow of life, reminding us that the journey is not always smooth, but rather characterized by tides and turbulence in every chapter.

In another series of her artwork titled “Returning Home,” Saurganga Darshandhari explores the challenges confronting contemporary Nepalese society. She delves into the migration of both our ancient historical artifacts and people seeking better opportunities abroad. Upon their eventual return, symbolized by a golden airplane, she highlights the allure of a prosperous life back home. The gallery showcases several installations of these airplanes, each narrating its own unique story.

Prithvi Shrestha’s artworks also narrate tales of love, resilience, and cultural admiration. In his series titled “Flow,” he portrays the flux of life, emphasizing its inherent fluctuations and the necessity to continue one’s journey despite the challenges.

At the heart of his exhibition, Prithvi Shrestha’s most acclaimed series is “Mask,” where he skillfully intertwines orally transmitted mythological narratives from his upbringing. In one captivating set of artworks within this series, he captures the playful essence of Myna birds, a rarity in today’s valley. These birds serve as symbols of fading cultural traditions in the modern era. As the birds gradually disappear, the artist reflects on the broader changes unfolding in life itself.

The exhibition runs until February 29th, inviting all art enthusiasts to experience the artworks firsthand.
