In recent years, the dialogue between art and religion has gained fresh momentum, with artists across the world exploring how the two can intersect to reveal deeper layers of human experience. Both traditions, after all, share a common goal: to guide us inward, towards reflection and the search for meaning. This spirit is very much alive at Mcube Gallery, Chakupat, where Mauritius-based artist Runveer Rawoo is currently presenting his solo exhibition Introspection.
The show invites viewers beyond surface aesthetics, encouraging them to encounter the works as meditative spaces. With natural pigments and symbolic imagery rooted in devotion, Rawoo’s paintings blur the boundaries between ritual and artistic expression—transforming the gallery into a site of contemplation as much as visual engagement.
Runveer’s artistic journey follows an uncommon path. Trained first in the sciences, he eventually turned to art in search of freedom and creative expression. After his early studies in Mauritius, he advanced to the College of Art, Delhi, where immersion in a vibrant community of artists broadened his vision and deepened his practice. His dedication was soon recognized with a Gold Medal in Art, an honor that affirmed his commitment to the discipline. Upon returning to Mauritius, he embraced a dual role as both art educator and practicing artist, exhibiting his works with conviction and earning consistent appreciation within the local art scene.
A defining turning point arrived in 2017, when Runveer encountered Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s videos and was profoundly influenced by the Save Soil movement. The experience awakened in him a desire to align artistic practice with ecological consciousness and spiritual inquiry. He began experimenting with materials drawn directly from the earth—initially mud mixed with glue, and later natural pigments such as turmeric, kumkum, and other organic substances. This transition not only redefined his process but also infused his work with a powerful duality: the sacred resonance of ritual and the urgent relevance of environmental awareness.
The exhibition at Mcube Gallery serves as a distilled reflection of Runveer’s evolving practice. At its core are striking representations of Linga Bhairavi, the fierce yet nurturing manifestation of the Divine Mother venerated in Sadhguru’s spiritual tradition. Set against luminous yellow grounds, the images exude both vibrancy and devotional gravity, inviting viewers into a space that oscillates between reverence and artistic experimentation. What makes the works particularly compelling is the material vocabulary—earth pigments, turmeric, kumkum, and other organic substances—that introduces not only a tactile richness but also layers of ritual symbolism. In this way, the very act of making becomes inseparable from the sacred subject matter, transforming the canvas into both an artwork and a site of spiritual invocation.
Runveer’s paintings resonate with echoes of modern masters, yet maintain a distinct voice of their own. The symbolic faces and cosmic forms evoke the spiritual mysticism of Paul Klee, while the bold, gestural strokes and raw chromatic intensity recall the expressive freedom of Henri Matisse and Willem de Kooning. What emerges is a striking interplay between childlike simplicity and conceptual depth, allowing the works to oscillate between intimacy and universality.
Analytically, his approach can be seen as a continuation of the modernist quest to transcend representation. Much like the Impressionists of 1860s France, who sought not to mirror reality but to capture its fleeting essence, Runveer privileges the inner impression over the external form. Yet his practice extends beyond Impressionist concerns with light and atmosphere, integrating spiritual symbolism and ecological materials. In this sense, his art bridges global modernist legacies with a culturally specific dialogue—one that fuses mysticism, ritual, and contemporary experimentation into a singular aesthetic language.
The exhibition runs from August 24 to August 29 at Mcube Gallery, Chakupat. More than a display of paintings, it is an invitation to enter into dialogue—with the works, with oneself, and with the larger questions of art, spirituality, and our relationship to nature. Visitors are warmly welcomed to experience Runveer Rawoo’s practice as both a visual encounter and a conscious, contemplative journey.
